Here’s a little idea to help jump start the writing process:

Cut and paste the first paragraph from from 3 different online articles into a word document.
Leave space in between them. Your task now is to write a transition paragraphs between the first and second and second and third.

This method removes that big ol’ “I don’t know where to start!!” block. And remember – THIS IS AN EXERCISE. It’s ok to write utter crap. Try and keep the goal of transitioning between paragraphs, but don’t take yourself too seriously.

Here is my example, with my addition in italics:

Next week, the brewery will be bottling up the first large batch of Sah’tea for the general public—a modern update on a ninth-century Finnish beverage. In the fall, The New Yorker documented the intricate research and preparation that went into making the beer, which was first offered on tap at the brewery in May. In short, brewmasters carmelize wort on white hot river rocks, ferment it with German Weizen yeast, then toss on Finnish berries and a blend of spices to jazz up this rye-based beverage. Reviewers at the BeerAdvocate universally praised Sah’tea, comparing it to a fruity hefeweizen. One user munched on calamari as he downed a pint and described the combo as “a near euphoric experience.” (from: Scientific American)

Another staff member from the Advocate likened the experience to video game development. “You look to the past, see what was successful, and find away to use it in your own creation,” stated Laars Jyonkin. Mr Jyonikn has been a staunch supporter of beer and video games since the Atari days, and now touts Defender Chonicles as a state of the art masterpiece.

Defender Chronicles combines role-playing adventure game and tower defense elements. You must protect the kingdom of Athelia from an attack by an army of orcs and the undead, installing berserkers, rangers, halfings, mages, warriors and archers along streets and paths to repel the invaders. You’ll also have to face off against massive boss monsters including ogres and golems. (from: macworld)

Your chances of surviving a boss monster attack could increase dramatically if high stepping moral purists, religious zealots, and others who object to stem cell research, can be kept at bay a few more years. Genetic science is on the verge of some major breakthroughs that could revolutionize healthcare.

Researchers around the world are creating different personalised simulations of living body parts, so that bespoke therapies can be tested and optimised without risk to the patient.(from: New Scientist)

How it works:

This method is all about connecting dots that were never meant to be connected. Hybridization or cross pollination are terms we could borrow (likely with very specific and worthy objections from geneticists) from the science community. This form of creative thinking is behind things like Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, Danger Mouse albums, and such unfortunate cocktails as the Fascist Bastard (a combination of malt liquor and fruit coolers – you have to be eighteen to really appreciate it).

Enjoy. There are two more fun little exercises to follow.
